Truck Drivers are required to pick up and deliver heavy loads of goods from one place to another using a truck. This travel may be from a manufacturer to a distribution center, from this last facility to customers, or between distribution centers. They are responsible for maintaining their log sheets and checking their trucks regularly to avoid failures. There are some cases where these drivers are required to also load and unload their truck.

Truck Drivers usually perform many of the following tasks:
• Inspecting equipment regularly.
• Driving different types of trucks.
• Washing their truck.
• Obtaining signatures from customers.
• Planning routes.


• Being able to drive for long hours.
• Having knowledge of road signs and routes.
• Being physically fit.
• Having good communication skills.
• Being able to follow regulations and rules.
• Having interpersonal skills.
• Being punctual.
• Having knowledge on how to maintain a truck.
• Being able to deal with critical situations.
• Having self-confidence.


Applicants for Truck Driver jobs are required to have a training program from a vocational or technical school in order to prepare for the Commercial Driver´s License. This qualification is required to drive vehicles carrying oversize loads, hazardous materials or trucks with a weight over 26,001 pounds. Driver-training programs teach how to maneuver large vehicles in highway traffic and crowded streets, and how to inspect trucks for compliance with regulations of this area. Students who want to take one of these courses are encouraged to check if the institution offering that program is approved by the Professional Truck Driver Institute in order to meet Federal Highway Administration guidelines and industry standards.
