Diesel Mechanics are required to maintain and repair diesel engines. They usually work with engines of trucks or other vehicles which run on that fuel, such as farm tractors, bulldozers, boats, busses, cranes, etc. These workers have advanced knowledge about transmissions, brake systems, and electronic components unique to diesel vehicles. They may work for different transportation companies or having their own business.

Diesel Mechanics usually perform many of the following tasks:
• Checking lighting systems of a vehicle.
• Replacing engines.
• Performing regular servicing.
• Keeping records of all the jobs done.
• Finding failures.

• Being physically fit.
• Having good observation skills.
• Being able to motivate others.
• Having good mechanical aptitude.
• Being able to detect technical malfunctions in the machines.

Diesel Mechanic jobs demand candidates having an Associate´s Degree or Diploma in Mechanical, Electrical or Automotive Engineering from an accredited institution. Employers in this industry also require apprenticeship applicants having mechanical ability and a High School Diploma. Courses related to this field, such as Machine Shop and Automobile repair are offered by several vocational schools and high schools. Students in these institutions are also encouraged to take courses in mathematics and sciences. Training programs in this field last three to four years and are under the supervision of experienced workers. Apprenticeship schemes available for this area last four years and include practical experience and classroom instruction. Professionals can obtain a voluntary certification offered by the National Institute for Automotive Service Excellence.
