Cashier job description


Cashiers are required to deal directly with monetary transactions of the customers. Responsibilities of these workers vary according to place of work, for instance, those who work for banks distribute funds for withdrawal and take deposits. Workers at stores take payments and handle customer´s bills. They may also work at bars, car dealerships, currency exchange centers, casinos, and restaurants.

Cashiers usually perform many of the following tasks:
• Processing refunds.
• Balancing the cash.
• Accepting payments.
• Greeting customers.
• Answering questions of customers about products.


• Having manual dexterity.
• Being able to work alone.
• Having high attention to details.
• Being accurate.
• Having math skills.
• Being trustworthy.
• Having good communication skills.
• Being able to process information through register systems.
• Having good customer service skills.
• Being self-motivated and proactive.


Candidates for Cashier jobs are required to have a High School Diploma as a minimum requirement. They also need to have good customer service skills, basic knowledge of computers, and math skills. Most persons working on this field learn their work by observing other cashiers in the same job. Some employers train candidates for few weeks, including equipment operation, an overview and policies of this business, security, and procedures. Then trainees are assigned to a register under the supervision of an experienced cashier. There are vocational schools that offer cashier courses for those persons who want to have better job opportunities in this area.
