Acupuncturists are responsible for applying procedures that stimulates anatomical points of the body using needles. These objects are metallic, solid and thin and can be manipulated by electrical stimulation or by hand. This therapy makes that body releases endorphins in the brain in order to block pains in different areas. These professionals treat asthma, arthritis, headache pain, among other conditions.

Acupuncturists usually perform many of the following tasks:
• Inserting needles.
• Applying electrical or heat stimulation.
• Determining treatments.
• Assessing patient´s condition.
• Providing follow up care.

Education

There are different options to become an Acupuncturist in the United States. People may have three-year postgraduate programs or apprenticeships related to this area. Requirements vary according to specific places of work and States, because in some areas applicants must be Chiropractors or Doctors of Medicine first. In other states, candidates need to have a Master´s in Acupuncture of postgraduate schools accredited by The Accreditation Commission for Acupuncture and Oriental Medicine. This degree lasts two years and has one more year of supervised practice. Requirements for these courses include undergraduate studies including physiology and anatomy.

There are certifications that indicate that a professional meets the standards established by a recognized commission. Applicants must pass an examination and have suitable educational requirement in order to obtain licensing and certification.
