Springfield is the largest city on the Connecticut River and the county seat of Hampden County, Massachusetts, United States. The city's population was 153,060 as of the 2010 United States Census, while the Springfield Metropolitan Area's population was estimated at 698,903 in 2009.Historically the first Springfield in the United States, it is the largest city in Western Massachusetts and the urban, cultural center of the Pioneer Valley. It is the third largest city in Massachusetts and fourth largest in New England (behind Boston, Worcester and Providence). Springfield has several nicknames — The City of Homes, The Birthplace of Basketball, The City of Firsts, and Hoop City.
