Persons working as medical representatives help companies to gain sales contracts for supplying medical equipment, drugs and supplies to hospitals, clinics, private practices, trusts and academic institutions. They also help employers in keeping such entities and consumers informed regarding products. Many job holders in this role are referred to as medical sales representatives
Tasks associated with the position can vary, though the role often involves regular meetings with pharmacists, doctors, nurses and other medical personnel as well as creating and conducting presentations, helping in the production of promotional materials and conducting product research, and undergoing training in the effort of staying personally informed
The job requires excellent interpersonal, organisational and time management skills, and a lot of travel may be required. Typically, employers require applicants to have a degree in biology, pharmacology or a related field in addition to sales experience. Product specific training may be required or provided by some employers
The average salary for individuals working in this position is just under £30,000 per annum, though figures can range immensely as commission is a significant part of remuneration for many positions; figures as high as £65,000 and as low as £15,000 are not uncommon.

Description

Pharmaceutical companies hire Medical Representatives to market, promote, and distribute their product samples. They arrange meetings and presentations with hospital administrators, nurses and medical practitioners. These representatives have to be very informed about the product and able to answer any questions asked of them. They have to be able to sell the idea to the doctors, who do not have a lot of free time.
A Medical Representatives usually performs many of the following tasks:
•  Making phone calls and scheduling appointments
• Attending meetings with doctors, nurses and pharmacists
• Delivering product pamphlets
• Going to product training sessions
• Promoting products

Medical Representatives have some kind of medical or scientific background. They are very conversant and aware of the products they sell. These professionals also have very good sales skills, and are able to manage orders and persuade or convince doctors to invest in their products. Some employers will hire graduates who do not have a medical background and offer them on the job training. Bachelors or Masters Degree holders of areas such As Biology, Chemistry, Physiology, Science, Engineering, Medicine and Pharmacology are highly desired for this position. People who are interested can pursue courses at the National Association of Medical Sales Representatives (NAMSR).
