Optometrist
Optometrists, doctors who specialise in diagnosing and treating eye conditions, have some of the most flexible jobs in the health-care industry. These doctors primarily diagnose vision problems, test their patients' eyesight, and prescribe corrective lenses, contact lenses, or other visual aids for those who need them
Some diseases optometrists diagnose, such as glaucoma and cataracts, directly affect the eyes, while others such as diabetes have declining vision among their side effects. Some optometrists are employed by hospitals, but even more professionals in this field are hired by regional or national optometry chains. Optometrists may also run their own independent high street practices
Other options in this career field include optical manufacturing, research or teaching. As optometrists advance in their careers, they may be responsible for supervising, training and managing other staff members. Other important aspects of their work include contacting salespeople and staying updated on the latest vision care products
Eight UK universities offer optometry degrees, and those who finish these rigorous studies may begin earning between £14,000 and £17,000 during their first career years. Five years later, these wages typically rise to between £37,500 and £53,600 per annum.
