Machine Operators are responsible for running equipment and machine tools at production or manufacturing facilities. They operate and specialize in machines like lathes, milling machines, precision grinders, boring machines, drill presses, among others. This job is repetitive and workers are required to use buttons, foot pedals, levers and switches. Sometimes they can perform calibrations and minor adjustments on the machines they use.

Students who want to work in this area are encouraged to take courses in carpentry or machine shop in order to gain suitable skills and knowledge for future jobs. There are apprenticeships and training programs that teach how to start machines, adjust speeds, and change tools. Apprenticeship schemes can last four years and include classroom instruction and job training. Candidates for these schemes are required to have a two-year technical program. Persons working on this field must have knowledge in statistics, trigonometry, geometry, algebra, metals, plastics and being able to read blueprints.
